The 29-year-old American, two-time Olympic champion and five-time overall World Cup winner, managed to tame the wind and difficult conditions in Vermont with bib 2 to beat Swedish Olympic champion Sara Hector of 32/100th.
Holder of the record for World Cup victories since the start of 2023, Shiffrin is aiming for the symbolic mark of 100 successes after her 99th in the slalom of Gurgl (Austria) last week.
The first round caused damage among the favorites. New Zealander Alice Robinson, winner in Sölden (Austria) for the season opener, went off the track. The Italian Federica Brignone is pushed back to 1 sec 26 and the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami to 1 sec 57. The French Clara Direz is pushed back to 2 sec 28. The second round is scheduled for 1 p.m. (7 p.m. in Paris).
