Two planes were involved in an accident taking off at the airport Castres-Mazamet in the south of Tarn on the morning of Saturday November 30, 2024. With an assessment ofaround forty victims. All taken care of by the emergency services.
This explains why many residents encountered fire trucks rushing towards the airport. Rest assured, it was a simulation. The Tarn prefecture and Castres-Mazamet airport organized a large-scale civil security exercise on the site from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Nearly 200 people mobilized
An exercise which involved nearly 200 people. On this occasion, the security forces, the rescue and care services, the civil security associations of the department were able to “experience their operational reflexes in crisis management and test the feedback of information and inter-service coordination in conditions closest to reality,” says the Tarn prefecture.
For all services, under the command of the Director of Operations (DO), this
exercise was intended to test the ORSEC plan (Organization of Security Response
Civil) departmental “Many casualties” through the establishment of the alert system, the feedback of information between the different command structures, inter-service coordination and the activation of an operational command post.
Behind closed doors
European and French regulations provide for crisis exercises to be carried out at airports every two years. The airport operator therefore organizes regular exercises to train internal and external staff in crisis operations, underlines the prefecture.
Saturday's event had no impact on road and air traffic. And for security reasons, the exercise was not open to the press or the public.
