Aliocha, you compose mainly in French now, is that because you live mainly in France?

All my influences were English-speaking, I knew the codes of this folk music. It was really very difficult to write in French. With the health crisis, my tour was cancelled and it was hard. I then decided to translate one of my songs into French and something was unlocked at that moment. It was really like a revelation when I wrote it all of a sudden.

What did young Alyosha listen to as a child in Montreal?

I listened to a lot of folk music, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Elliott Smith.

What did Jean Leloup, nicknamed the “Quebec Mick Jagger” bring to you?

He taught me that they would try to format me. He had experienced it personally; he did everything to protect me from all that. It was a very rich exchange. I recently learned that he had also been programmed at the Francofolies de La Rochelle.

Your song “Ensemble” was used in a commercial for SNCF Connect, is that a nice spotlight on your work?

Absolutely! It helped to make me known and I’m happy with the result. The spot is pretty and consistent with my song. It was an incredible opportunity for me.

You work a lot with your brother Vassili, is family inseparable from your work?

For me, it is important to work with those who know me well and whom I appreciate. I like to create with people I trust and with whom I have fun.

In France, we like to put people into boxes, so should we introduce you as an actor or singer, more Canadian than French?

I feel French in Canada and Canadian in France. When you’re an actor, you’re in someone else’s world. Music is my project, it’s much more personal and spontaneous.

“I don’t feel able to write about things I haven’t experienced”

Your album evokes your life as a thirty-something, women are very present in it…

I write mostly about things I’ve felt, about the truth of feelings. It’s to talk about things that go through me. I don’t feel capable of writing about things I haven’t experienced. This album is a snapshot of a period in my life. When I wrote these songs, I was in Greece because I was filming a series and a movie at the time. I think you can feel that in my lyrics and the arrangements. I didn’t want it to be a sad record… I’m a real sponge, it’s the spirit of the times that I’m talking about.

What does going to the Francofolies mean to you?

It’s a big name and I can’t wait to perform there…

Especially since you will be there with your family (his partner Charlotte Cardin will sing on July 10, Editor’s note)?

It doesn’t happen often. But I don’t like to talk about my private life.

What are your projects ?

Continue this tour that fills me! I then have other appointments but as nothing is signed, I prefer not to talk about it.

Aliocha Schneider will perform on Saturday July 13 at 3 p.m. at the Verdière theater in La Rochelle.
