Giant spiral slides, structures to climb, a future urban forest to plant… A new step has been taken in the development of the south of the Confluence district in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon.

At the beginning of July, the City and the Metropolis inaugurated a new play area for children and families in an area that has yet to be urbanized.

Large slides, a 40-meter caterpillar, fountains…

“Caterpilou”, a large 1,200 m² play area located in the heart of the “Champ de la Confluence” connected to Cours Charlemagne by Allée Canopée, is now accessible to the general public, passing visitors and residents.

The space includes a 9 m high structure composed of 10 segments articulated around giant rings with a diameter ranging from 1.5 to 4 m with big slides which takes the form ofa large caterpillar 40 meters long.

There will also be a swing, a trampoline and water areas such as fountains for playing, cooling off and drinking.

Children from the Germaine Tillion and Alix elementary schools and the MJC Confluence were consulted to give their opinions and ideas on their ideal playground.

A large green space in the making

The playground is a first step that must be integrated into a vast “canopy”, a sort of urban forest with 1,000 trees at the end of the Confluence district, where the circus or the fairground vogue is installed, which had its last edition this year. On 6 hectares, the City of Lyon is going to develop an island of freshness there.

About forty trees will be planted directly on the playground to provide shade. Next winter, trees will be planted so that the caterpillar can find its place in a real urban forest, says the Lyon Metropolis.

At the end of 2024, a second phase of the construction site will begin in order to develop the surroundings and the future forecourt of the former Halle Caoutchouc, which is to become a place dedicated to health. New buildings, less tall and dense than the first and second phases of the Confluence development, will also be built in this sector to put a final touch to the sector.
