It is about the only cynodrome in the region. In Monteux, in Vaucluse, the dog track is an exception, reports Bleu Vaucluse. This circular track, designed for dog racing, is one of the last seven official dog racing tracks in France.

Created in the 1980s and recently renovated, this atypical place sees dogs racing at full speed every week, sometimes reaching peaks of 70 km/h, for fun and competition.

Spectacular and friendly races

Contrary to some popular belief, the races organized in Monteux are neither cruel nor restrictive for the animals. Dogs, often greyhounds like Sloughis, but also other breeds, run for a maximum of two laps while pursuing a mechanical lure. The atmosphere is friendly, and the animals run freelywithout muzzles or pressure, simply to have fun and exercise.

An activity in decline, but preserved in Monteux

Once very common, dog tracks are today a rarity. In France, there were around a hundred 50 years ago; there are only seven left. Banning betting on greyhound racing in 2020 contributed to this decline, not because of abuse, but for reasons of administrative control. In Monteux, the activity continues thanks to the investment of enthusiasts.

A place where the well-being of dogs is essential

The Monteux dog track, which brings together around twenty members, places emphasis on respect for dogs.
