This Friday, November 29, the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, visited Calais and Ambleteuse to discuss the migration crisis with elected officials. A meeting during which the minister made announcements in order to meet the expectations of the French.
The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, was traveling to Ambleteuse, in the North, this Friday, November 29 to discuss the migration crisis with elected officials. To meet the needs and expectations of the French, the “first cop of France” made some announcements in four parts, the first of which concerns “everyday security”.
Therefore, during this visit, Bruno Retailleau announced that a reinforcement company dedicated to the fight against illegal immigration of the National Police will be set up “for periods of high migratory pressure”, according to the model deployed during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, composed of 75 personnel.
In addition, the minister announced “the securing of funding for CRS cantonment in Calais” as well as the “negotiation of a budget for the creation of a new police headquarters” in this same city.
British funding “for the benefit of the Pas-de-Calais firefighters”
Still as part of the strengthening of border police (PAF) personnel in Calais, Bruno Retailleau indicated that 10 police officers have already arrived in November and 65 others will arrive on Monday, bringing the total number of PAF personnel to 75. Likewise, the Dunkirk and Calais police stations will be reinforced with 25 staff, including 15 for Dunkirk and 10 for Calais.
The 2nd component concerns support for local authorities and residents. Thus, farmers and individuals who have suffered “damage to property” will be entitled to a “compensation fund”.
Also, the Minister of the Interior proposed British funding “for the benefit of the Pas-de-Calais firefighters for the care of the shipwrecked”. And finally, he entrusted the Prefect Delegate for Defense and Security with the mission of fighting against “irregular immigration on the coast with the creation of a team to support elected officials”.
an overhaul of the migration framework
The third part of these announcements concerns the fight against networks. In this context, Bruno Retailleau proposes the “creation of an investigation group in Dunkirk to dismantle the smuggler networks on the coast with 14 staff attached to the branch of the Office for the fight against illicit trafficking of migrants (OLTIM ) of Lille. The Calais OLTIM will, for its part, be reinforced with “six new staff dedicated to the fight against smugglers”.
The last part concerns a new migration dialogue with the United Kingdom. Concretely, Bruno Retailleau proposes to “get out of bilateral dialogue and involve Europe”. In fact, 30% of irregular migratory flows returning to Europe enter the North Sea coast. So, everyone must be involved in the discussions.
Finally, the Minister of the Interior pleads for an overhaul of the migration framework “which had disappeared with Brexit” and this in three parts, namely a legal route of passage to the United Kingdom, a readmission mechanism to the Union European Union and a readmission mechanism to the United Kingdom. “This concerns foreigners from third countries to the European Union, Europeans and the British,” says Place Beauvau.
