Since 2015, seafood shells can be deposited in the nine recycling centers in the La Baule–Guérande CapAtlantique conurbation (Loire-Atlantique). If, before, collection was only done in December and January, since last year, users can drop off their shells from November to spring, reports The Echo of the Guérandaise Peninsula and Saint-Nazaire.
Shells transformed into compost
During the last collection, 28 tonnes of shells were recovered. Almost twice as much as in previous years, when collection was only done over two months. Once deposited, this waste is treated by a company in Morbihan. The shells are crushed then converted into compost, which is then made available to farmers.
If you want to go to a recycling center to throw away your shells, remember to remove any item that cannot be treated: fingerwash, lemons, shrimp or even shellfish remains. Please note that all types of shellfish can be placed in the bins specially provided for the operation.
