In France this year, one meter of rain has already fallen per square meter

This is further proof that 2024 is a rainy year. According to Météo , while the month of November is not yet over, the equivalent of one meter of water height per square meter has already fallen across the entire country, i.e. 1,000 mm, the measurement for precipitation.

Such an amount makes the current year a vintage that is already wetter than the whole of 2023. Last year, only 972 mm fell, the equivalent of 97 cm of water per square meter.

“2024 will be among the rainiest years France has ever known. The total for the year will greatly depend on the rain that will fall in December,” explains the meteorological organization.

The year got off to a strong start. Spring was thus “very wet”. It is the fourth rainiest since 1959, according to Météo France. September and October were also very rainy, including the passage of the remnants of Hurricane Kirk. This is when several areas of the country exceeded their average cumulative annual precipitation. In the case of , this threshold was crossed on September 25.

Even if the situations are disparate, the bad weather has lost intensity in recent weeks. This is due to “the installation of lasting anticyclonic conditions and the return of drier weather at the beginning of November”.

For now, weather models predict that December will be drier than average overall. But the final accumulation will exceed 1,000 mm. The intensity of precipitation until December 31 will determine the place of 2024 in the list of wettest years.
