In Little House on the Prairie, this kiss between Laura and Almonzo had caused controversy because she was a minor, Dean Butler justifies himself: “The mothers were worried…”

Already more than forty years since the arrest of The Little House On The Prairie ! However, the cult series never ceases to be talked about. Thus, recently it was Dean Butler (Almanzo) who revealed the behind the scenes of a cult scene with Melissa Gilbert (Laura)…

It was first broadcast on March 30, 1974 Little house on the prairie in the United States, better known in France under the title The Little House On The Prairie. Beginning with the installation of the Ingalls family near Walnut Grove, over time, the series will deal with many other families like the Olesons (and the famous Nelly Oleson played by the truculent Alison Arngrim), the Edwards or the Garveys. However, on March 21, 1983, after 205 episodes, and three TV movies, the fiction inspired by the novels of the real Laura Ingalls ends in a memorable scene: the explosion of Walnut Grove.

The Little House On The Prairie : “She was really a little girl”Dean Butler (Almanzo) reflects on his age gap with Melissa Gilbert (Laura)

Present in the series from season 6, the character of Almanzo (Dean Butler, amused by an anecdote with the fans of the series) quickly made Laura’s heart skip a beat (Melissa Gilbert – moved by thinking back to Michael Landon) before the two kissed for the first time in episode 22. A passage that had moved part of the audience at the time by the age difference of the two actors. Indeed, the interpreter of Almanzo was, in fact, 23 years old while that of Charles’ daughter (Michael Landon) was only 15. An age gap, justified by a desire to stick to the works that inspired the series, on which the 68-year-old actor returned for Fox News Digital. “We couldn’t do that today. There would be too much backlash.” he exclaimed before mentioning the youth of his former playing partner “She was really a little girl (…) As an actress, she was very gifted. But as a young woman, she was very inexperienced. And I think it was much more difficult for her than for me.” He then returned to the famous kiss and the strength of the actress’ acting. “Melissa had no experience. (…) She had never kissed anyone. (…) She put all her anxieties aside and got into the game. She knew what she had to do to be the Laura she was supposed to be.” An ease that was not so obvious, as Dean Butler points out, because a hundred members of the team surrounded them.

The Little House On The Prairie : Melissa Gilbert’s (Laura) mother in tears over Dean Butler (Almanzo)

While Melissa Gilbert – who shared her worst memory on the show – seems to have handled this delicate scene with precocious professionalism, her mother, Barbara, did not have the same reaction. “I felt that Barbara was not fully supportive of my presence on the show. The height of her unhappiness was reached because she was not able to see me kiss her daughter.” For her part, Melissa Gilbert also returned to her first fictional kiss in her memoirs, describing “a storm of disappointment, fear, anger and even nausea”
