Over the past ten days, showers in Guyana have become more and more numerous, foreshadowing a much-anticipated rainy season. After a severe drought which emptied the bed of the Maroni like that of the Oyapock, the Guyanese could experience a good wet period in line with what is expected at this time of the year.

Forecasts from Météo Guyana forecast regular showers in the coming days across the entire Guyanese territory. Until now, they have mainly concerned the north of the country but the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ZICT or Meteorological Trade Wind Equator) extends over the entire territory and rainy episodes will intensify. The North-East will be particularly affected between Saint-Georges and . The area of Kaw, Cacao, Roura and Montsinéry should be well watered by December 3.

In the North-West, it will also rain but the rainfall accumulations will be less significant. In this part of Guyana, particularly on the upper Maroni where drought has been raging for months, rain is eagerly hoped for. The few showers of the last few days have not caused the level of the Maroni River to rise except marginally. For the transporter Antoine Abienso based in Maripasoula this remains largely insufficient:

“It’s still so dry here. The transport canoes navigate some parts where there are basins… Behind the jumps, there are retentions which allow certain transporters to circulate with small canoes but always with difficulty. To cross the jumps, they must pull the canoes. The light rains are far from enough, the waters of the river have even continued to fall. It didn't rain enough. »

The river bed could quickly return to normal flow provided that it rains more according to Antoine Abienso:

« It can rise very quickly if it rains a lot, but if it doesn't last long, the level of the watercourses goes back down just as quickly. The mountains must be well watered and there must be water in the heads of the mountain creeks so that the water level is maintained. »

The drought in Guyana has lasted for more than a year. We will have to wait for the end of the short rainy season and the short summer of March and the start of the heavy rainy season between April and June to know if the climate returns to a certain normality.
