Keir Starmer and his wife, Victoria, welcomed to 10 Downing Street

A new historic address. After his party’s landslide victory in the British general election, Labour leader Keir Starmer was appointed Prime Minister by King Charles III at noon on Friday 5 July. The 61-year-old former lawyer then moved into his new residence with his wife, Victoria Starmer, at 10 Downing Street, just a few days after his predecessor, Rishi Sunak, had gone the other way.

Arriving at the residence’s famous black door, Keir Starmer promised that he would “start the work of change immediately” and “rebuild the United Kingdom” after 14 years of Conservative governments. “It will take some time, but have no doubt that the work of change begins immediately. We will rebuild Britain by creating wealth in every community,” he promised.

Greeted by an exultant crowd waving the Union Jack, the British flag, he smiled and embraced relatives gathered outside the entrance to 10 Downing Street before making his entrance.

Victoria Starmer’s first real appearance

For many Britons, this appearance was the first opportunity to discover Victoria Starmer’s face. The woman who has shared the life of the head of the Labour government for more than 20 years has never given an interview and her public appearances are made sparingly: with her husband at the polling station on election days, in the grandstand at the Wimbledon tennis tournament, or at Buckingham Palace for official dinners and receptions.

Born Alexander, Victoria Starmer, 50, is the daughter of an accountant father of Polish Jewish origin and a doctor mother. A former Labour activist and horse racing enthusiast, she worked as a lawyer in a law firm before joining the National Health Service (NHS) several years ago. A practising member of the Jewish community, she regularly attends synagogue and hosts Shabbat dinners on Friday nights.
