“Swiss-German required”. A rare mention on job offers in French-speaking Switzerland, which would give a cold sweat to more than one candidate. This is because on this side of the Sarine, mastery of German already often represents a difficulty. What can we say about that of a dialect! But to what extent does this ability represent an asset on the job market today?

Remember that in Switzerland 62% of inhabitants speak German (Swiss-German), 23% French, 8% Italian and 0.5% Romansh. Twenty-three percent also say they speak another language as their primary language. On the labor market more precisely, figures from the Federal Statistical Office for 2022 (latest available) show that Swiss-German is the most frequently spoken language (61% of employed people), followed by standard German (34%), French (28%), then English (23%) and Italian (8%).
