The massive reduction of positions at the Haute-Garonne departmental council, to save money, is mobilizing state agents. The news came like a hammer, they say.
Never has a departmental council experienced such an earthquake. Haute-Garonne will cut 500 jobs out of a total of 7,000 agents. Since the news broke, civil servants, in shock at the announcement, have not let up and are coming together. “We learned about it by email, like all community agents, without consultation”assures Raphaël Crouset, CGT delegate.
The positions eliminated are mainly contract workers, such as a 24-year-old technical agent, Léo Bert-Cuillet, who has been on fixed-term contracts for a year and a half. “We were all stunned, even on the scale of my superior, she also knew nothing”he explains, distraught. The institution justifies these job cuts by the need to make 164 million euros in savings.
