According to The Observerthe Mbour Detention and Correction Center is shaken by a succession of tragic tragedies, plunging the detainees, particularly those from Malaw City, into deep distress. These events led prisoners to begin a hunger strike, denouncing their conditions of detention and demanding immediate improvements.

A heavy atmosphere reigns in the establishment, reports The Observer. Since November 26, 2024, the inmates of Malaw City, caught in a cycle of tragedies, have initiated this collective movement. These actions demonstrate growing desperation over the indifference of prison authorities. The drama began with the death of Elimane Sarr, an elderly inmate from Room 13, who suffered from intense pain in his feet. According to The Observerthe man, transferred to Thierno Mohamedoul Mansour Barro hospital in Mbour, died on November 25, 2024, leaving the prison community in mourning. Shortly after, a second dramatic event further darkened the atmosphere.

On November 23, two young detainees, Mbaye Niang and Babacar Hanne, had a violent altercation in Room 17. The Observer specifies that, deemed dangerous, they were placed together in an isolation cell. However, this isolation led to a tragic outcome. On the night of November 23 to 24, Babacar Hanne attacked Mbaye Niang, inflicting fatal injuries. Despite rapid intervention, Niang died in hospital the following Tuesday.

According to The Observerthis death aroused general indignation among the prisoners. In addition to the poor living conditions, they denounce the management of internal conflicts, pointing the finger at the prison administration. Room 16, intended for the sick but overcrowded, has become a symbol of this crisis. Designed for 50 detainees, it accommodates 84, underlines The Observer. This overcrowding contributed to the deaths of two detainees in one week, worsening an already untenable situation. Detainees on hunger strike hope that a collective cry of alarm will finally make the competent authorities react.
