TRIBUNE – Dear French people,

We, Mayors of Seine-Saint-Denis, would like to write to you today. We would like to write to you because our territory, our department and our inhabitants are at the heart of the rhetoric of the extreme right and Jordan Bardella. We are the pure representation of their fantasy of the great replacement. They constantly mobilize anger and fear in you, our dear compatriots. Fear in the face of a world that is increasingly unequal, that excludes and over which we have the feeling of having no control. Anger in the face of certain news items, events, often blown out of proportion. You have probably heard it as we have, for the RN and Mr. Bardella, everything is always simple, there should be more authority and always fewer immigrants. By acting in this way, he transforms disagreements on the collective choices to be made into hatred. Faced with the feelings, the speeches of the extreme right and in the historical moment in which we are immersed, we appeal to your intelligence. Hannah Arendt said these words: “If he stops thinking, every human being can act like a barbarian.”. So, humbly, our dear compatriots, we implore you to vote by mobilizing reason and by blocking the extreme right.

So we are going to tell you about us. We are a special territory. We play a major role in international reception. We have 30% immigrants among us, the highest rate in France, and we live well. The cultural and religious communities talk to each other, listen to each other and, above all, respect each other in their common dignity.

We have 30% immigrants among us, the highest rate in France, and we live well.

But beyond that, we are net contributors to national wealth, we produce more than we receive. Cynically, one could say that the immigrant workers of Seine-Saint-Denis finance the pensions of the voters of Messrs Bardella and Ciotti. Our territory is teeming with talent, in all sports, cultural and economic fields, it speaks more than 160 languages. It creates more than 30,000 businesses each year; the Social and Solidarity Economy, this economy of repairing man and the living is in full development there. Our territory is above all an infinite chain of solidarity. Faced with difficulties, its inhabitants are teeming with ideas and mutual aid to live better.

Dear compatriots, for a delinquent that you will see on CNews, hundreds of people, activists, mutual aid and solidarity will be invisible in the media. Is everything perfect? Certainly not. But here is being built the France of tomorrow. A France that asks for nothing more than equality. A France of the fight against discrimination, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. A France that knows what the decline of public service is, the post offices or the schools that close. A France that like you suffers from a lack of public facilities, courthouses or hospitals. A France that gets up early to go and clean the offices of the West of Paris, the streets, collect the trash or deliver parcels. A France that invents, innovates, builds, designs the future.

The transition to violent action, to barbarity, always begins with words. So today, we want to write to you to tell you that the time for choice has come.

For our residents, the rise to power of Mr. Bardella and his cronies is a matter of life or survival. Who cannot see that, behind a speech that is supposed to be polite, lies the most filthy xenophobia? The repressed quickly comes galloping back when the leaders of the RN have to speak out on the situation of our dual-national compatriots. We know that you have been shocked by the liberation of racist speech observed in recent days. The transition to violent action, to barbarity always begins with words.

So today, we want to write to you to tell you that the time for choice has come. Despite appearances and a public debate that is too often truncated on the subject, our society is evolving towards greater tolerance. We know that a majority of you, our compatriots, share our vision of a common humanity. We want to write to you to tell you that crossbreeding produces a fruitful encounter between cultures and imaginations to form new ones. France, through its history, through the very nature of its political construction, is a land of welcome and dialogue. Because France is not a community of blood, but rather a community of destiny.

Here we see a France that you need not fear because it is alive, united and exciting.

On July 7, let us choose together this common destiny, filled with liberty, equality and fraternity.
