“It’s been three weeks since the children no canteen at lunchtime and eat sandwiches.” Wilfrid Dulouard, FCPE representative of Seine-Saint-Denis, takes stock of an increasingly tense situation, while a movement of strike launched by agents of the children's and school life service still impacts the vast majority of school catering services in Saint-Denis. Pushed to the limit, parents of students will gather in front of town hall, Thursday November 28, 2024, the day of the municipal council, to express their anger and support the demands of the strikers.
A very successful strike
Wednesday November 27, alone 9 canteens were open out of the 71 what does the city have? 30 were completely closed, and 32 were able to welcome students with picnics provided by parents. “The municipality also provides sandwiches. Parents of students organize to take several children home for lunch. Some were forced to take days off. A mother even gave up her job to take care of her child,” explains Wilfrid Dulouart. “Parents feel abandoned”he regrets.
The anger is all the greater as they “recognize themselves in the agents’ demands”, indicates the FCPE representative. They denounce a deterioration of their working conditions due to understaffed croissants. In particular, they are asking for more supervisors in extracurricular activities, “to return to 1 facilitator for 10 in kindergarten and 1 for 14 in elementary school”, compared to 1 for 14 in kindergarten and 1 for 18 in elementary school currently. Added to recruitment difficulties is the non-replacement of absences, explains Wilfrid Dulouart.
“Parents are struggling”
If the city defends a strong social policy with free canteens for all, thelack of listening of the municipality is singled out. “The city refuses to listen to us and to hear the agents who express a suffering at work. As a result, the scenario repeats itself every year with strike movements which followed in 2020, 2022, 2023. Meanwhile, parents are struggling.”
To protest, they launched a ''sandwich operation': let's have a picnic together and show elected officials what our children eat for lunch! », Calls the parents’ association. The mobilization also aims to request changes in the training of teams responsible for extracurricular activities, an end to the forced mobility of leaders in leisure centers, or even better care for children with disabilities with more numerous AESH and better trained.
