Rabat – The Higher Academic Authority for Translation, under the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) organized, Wednesday in Rabat, a scientific seminar on “Current practices of translation from and into Amazigh”.

On this occasion, the participants reviewed a number of issues related to the reality of translation from and into Amazigh, particularly in terms of objectives and methodology, as well as IRCAM’s record in this area and the challenges and constraints.

The speakers stressed that the field of translation from and into Amazigh in Morocco is a promising field that is experiencing remarkable development, noting however the persistence of challenges to be met in order to ensure accurate and effective translation, in particular through investment in technology, training and support for scientific research.

For the director of the Arabization Coordination Office of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), Abdelfattah Lahjomri, translation into the Amazigh language now occupies an advanced place in the decision-making and implementation processes of the Kingdom with a view to its development and promotion as a language and culture.

He also highlighted the importance of specialized dictionaries in the Amazigh language as tools of linguistic knowledge that help preserve the language against the risk of oblivion and promote its transition from oral to written form, calling in this sense for the training of competent translators specialized in this language.

For his part, the Rector of IRCAM, Ahmed Boukous, stressed the importance of this meeting which constitutes an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of translation from and into Amazigh and to explore opportunities for cooperation between IRCAM and the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco for a participatory policy between the two institutions in the service of the Amazigh language.

And to note, in a statement to MAP, that the most important challenge facing translation into the Amazigh language is the provision of specialized dictionaries encompassing new technical terms for the Amazigh culture and language.

The Higher Academic Authority for Translation, whose mission is to promote works of translation, in Morocco and abroad, particularly in Arabic and Amazigh, is mainly dedicated to the translation of reference works, studies and scientific research in various scientific fields, thought, culture, heritage and civilization.

It also ensures the encouragement of scientific research on questions of translation studies and its applications, in coordination with institutions and organizations specialized in the field, whether national or foreign.
