Hampered by injury since the start of the year, Victor Lafay (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) now hopes to finally be able to launch his season this summer by taking part in the Vuelta.

After showing great things in 2023, notably by winning the 3rd stage of the Tour de France in San Sebastian, Victor Lafay is currently at a standstill. Indeed, while he left Cofidis for Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale in the off-season, The Frenchman has seen his progress halted by injury since the start of the year. Because of the latter, the Lyon native has still not been able to do a single race with his new team in 2024. In recent months, if the French team has shone and seen its riders win many victories, Lafay has had to be patient. While he was hoping to participate in the Tour de France for a third time in a row this year, the latter was forced to give up. I wasn’t sure if I was going to watch because I was really pissed off not to be there. “, acknowledged the main person concerned, who seems close to a return to competition.

Lafay: “We’re keeping our fingers crossed”

“In mid-January, I felt pain in my left knee while riding. We quickly understood that it was in the kneecap and femur, but it took us a long time to find the cause and the remedy. (…) It’s very painful. It’s cartilage pain, difficult to describe. It hurts more than tendonitis. (…) First I had to give up on the Ardennes, then on the Tour de France, and finally on the Olympic Games. Now we have the right treatment in place and there are rapid improvements. I first started riding for 1h30 again, then I reached levels, explained Lafay, who finally watched the first stage between Florence and Rimini, during an interview with L’Equipe. This week, I have already done 16 hours of cycling with intensity in four days! I have the Tour de l’Ain (July 13-15) in mind to prepare for the Vuelta (August 17-September 8), but we’re keeping our fingers crossed. »
