“He elevates the relations of our two countries to a higher level”: the king received the delegate from Palestine, a state not yet recognized by Belgium

For the first time, Palestine has an ambassador in Belgium, even if our country does not recognize the State of Palestine. Today, the ambassador was received by King Philippe, but the protocol had to be adapted in view of the situation.

The Palestinian delegation presented itself at the Royal Palace 20 minutes before the meeting. A long-awaited moment. “For the first time, a Palestinian ambassador presents his credentials to the King of the Belgians. This is a historic moment and an incredible opportunity for me.”declared the head of the Palestinian representation in Brussels, Amal Jadou Shakaa.

The leader was received by the king, but Belgium does not recognize Palestine. It was therefore necessary to find a tailor-made solution. No mention of the title of ambassador in the Palace press release, which speaks of “Head of the Representation of Palestine” having “handed over his mission letters”. Usually, press releases mention the presentation of letters of credence to ambassadors.”

The guard was limited to a handful of soldiers. We were far from the pomp reserved for other ambassadors accredited in our country, with the mounted guard.

Usually, the king is in full uniform. Today, simple costume. But nothing to offend the Palestinian head of mission. “The Belgian government has been so generous to me. Being received by the king is a strong message. It elevates the relations of our two countries to a new level. I don’t feel any difference between me and the other ambassadors”she added.

The head of mission will indeed bear the title of ambassador, as confirmed by Foreign Affairs. “You can very well be an ambassador for an organization that is not a state. So that, in itself, is entirely possible.”explains Christian Behrendt, professor of constitutional law at ULiège.

Amal Jadou Shakaa has a mission: to obtain recognition by Belgium of a Palestinian state as quickly as possible.
