Beaten to death in a CHSLD: “It could have been avoided if the employees had been listened to”

A man losing his autonomy died in a CHSLD in Thetford Mines after being violently beaten by another resident, a tragedy that could have been avoided, according to the employers’ union.

The tragedy allegedly occurred on June 18 in the Saint-Alexandre CHSLD. The two residents involved were in a unit housing people with cognitive problems, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s or behavioral disorders.

According to what was reported anonymously by an employee of this unit to TVA Nouvelles, and which was also confirmed by the union representing employees of this CHSLD, the victim went to another resident’s room on the evening of June 18 and then lay down in his bed. It was upon seeing him in his bed that the other resident, who suffered from severe behavioural problems, allegedly attacked him violently.

Staff working in the unit intervened, but the resident died from the injuries sustained.

The union representing workers at this CHSLD denounced the excessive number of patients in this unit. In fact, there were 27 on the day of the tragedy, whereas there should have been 12, according to the union.

“We’ve been denouncing the situation for a year, the employees have been denouncing the situation. They asked for meetings [avec l’employeur] to say that it didn’t look right, that this clientele is too heavy […]”This could have been avoided if the employees had been listened to,” said Carole Mercier, president of the Chaudière-Appalaches Health Care Professionals Union, in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

Without commenting on the matter, the CIUSSS de Chaudière-Appalaches indicated that it was aware of the issues concerning space problems in this unit and indicated that work is underway to reduce the number of residents by separating the place into two separate units.

In addition to an internal investigation, the Sûreté du Québec has opened an inquiry, as has the coroner’s office.
