Long lagging behind in terms of connectivity, the Paris metro has made significant progress in this area in recent years. After the arrival of 4G in the trains, 5G is slowly starting to make headlines.

Fully covered in 4G since 2020 after years of neglect, the RATP network is quietly turning to 5G connectivity to improve the browsing experience of travelers, but also their ability to stay informed in real time about traffic conditions.

As part of his “Parigo” column, France 3 gives us more information on the implementation of 5G in the Paris metro. We learn that its first real appearance is planned for next year, with the commissioning of line 15 of the Grand Paris Express, at the end of 2025. As a reminder, this network should add around 200 km of new automated metro lines to the existing RATP network.

5G in the bowels of Paris? Yes, but not everywhere

Of course, lines 16, 17 and 18 of this same Grand Paris Express will also benefit from 5G connectivity, designed to provide very high-speed connections both underground and outdoors. However, it is not known at this stage whether the entire 200 km of new lines will actually be covered, or whether certain portions of this network will have to do without 5G connectivity.

Furthermore, we should expect a much more sporadic deployment of 5G on the historic lines of the Paris metro, which are already covered by 4G. And for good reason, some lines simply do not have the space necessary for the installation of 5G antennas by operators.

It should be noted at the same time that line 14, which connects the Saint-Denis Pleyel station to Orly airport from its extension, is an exception. The latter benefits from Wi-Fi connectivity.
