26 novembre 1974. Simone Veil s’avance à la tribune de l’Assemblée nationale. La ministre de la Santé s’apprête à défendre son projet de loi dépénalisant l’avortement dans un discours qui deviendra historique. « Je voudrais vous faire partager une conviction de femme. Je m’excuse de le faire devant cette assemblée presque exclusivement composée d’hommes, déclare-t-elle. Aucune femme ne recourt de gaieté de cœur à l’avortement. Guaranteed freedom to resort to abortion in the Constitution

The so-called Veil law will be adopted by 284 votes to 189, thanks to elected officials from the left and centrists, and promulgated on January 17, 1975. With the constitutional law of March 8, 2024, France becomes the first country in the world to refer to the voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in its fundamental text. Article 34 of the Constitution provides that “the law determines the conditions under which the freedom guaranteed to a woman to have recourse to a voluntary termination of pregnancy is exercised”.
