The “Muchedent au Naturel” association has made the protection of toads a priority. According to Actu.frthis endangered species is in danger on the roads of Seine-Maritime. To help the amphibians cross without being crushed, volunteers set up buckets, which they fill with toads, before sending them across. But the association hopes to be able to install toadstools in Saint-Hellier and Saint-Saëns (Seine-Maritime).
Since 2013, the association has been setting up systems to help and protect amphibians on a daily basis. After a first test in Muchedent, three toad installations are planned in Saint-Hellier.
Real needs for measures to protect toads
The creation of infrastructure for amphibians is not new but it is necessary in this corner of Seine-Maritime, according to the president of the association. A project should see the light of day on the Dieppe road and extend over 300 meters in length. As for the crapauduc on rue de la Fresnaye, the association plans to use existing sewer grates. The third would be installed on the Saint-Hellier road.
For now, the association has created makeshift toadstools, with tarpaulins and buckets. The toads found there then cross with the help of volunteers every day. Volunteers are being sought as reinforcements for 2025. A pot has also been set up to find €30,000 to create sustainable toadstools.
