The Great Strasbourg Sale (Bas-Rhin) returns to liven up the streets of the Big Island throughout the day July 20, 2024, in a completely new format. “It will not be the clearance sale this year, it will be the Grand Unpacking,” tells us Gwen Bauer, president of Vitrines de Strasbourg, contacted by telephone, thus confirming information from our colleagues at Pokaa.

We explain to you what will change.

A smaller sale than in previous years

Since it will not occupy the entire Big Island, the Grand Déballage is a more “light” and concentrated version of the clearance sale that Strasbourg residents usually experience.

It’s a big unpacking of traders in front of their store. And non-sedentary traders, who were normally spread across the entire island, will set up shop in two squares: Place Gutenberg and Place Kléber.

The difference with previous editions? The city centre will not be completely closed, the trams will continue to run and there will be will have fewer exhibitors.

300 traders expected in the streets

Twenty days before the event, the president cannot give us the number of exhibitors exact :

“There will be approximately 300 traders who will be outside [pour participer au grand déballage, NDLR] “, says Mr. Bauer.

In previous years, there were around 500: “It will especially be the share of non-sedentary people who will be reduced”, according to the president of Vitrines de Strasbourg.

The 2024 edition “should not have taken place”

“Normally, she [la Grande Braderie de Strasbourg, NDLR] was not supposed to take place this year,” admits Gwen Bauer.

The reasons? The organization of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which begin on July 26, and the mobilization of law enforcement in the capital.

In this context, it was necessary to deal with the reduction in the number of law enforcement personnel to secure the event in Strasbourg.

In 2025, a return to normal?

For the moment, the president cannot ensure that the Big Sale will return, in its initial form, for a 2025 edition: “We will see what this new version will give [pour 2024, NDLR] and based on this, we will see if we return to the format of the Grande Braderie or if we adapt the formats for the years to come.”

The president wants to make this event “a party in the city” and promises entertainment, concerts and other surprises.
