The 39-year-old man arrived at the Perpignan prison center in October, following his transfer from Béziers. After a few weeks in the Catalan prison, a psychiatric hospitalization was decided. But the inmate escaped this Friday evening around 8:30 p.m., without the precise conditions of this escape being known. According to information from France Bleu Roussillon, the man finally surrendered on his own to the Montpellier police on Saturday afternoon, putting an end to the ongoing search.
Involved in a shooting which cost the life of a man in Béziers in 2019, the escapee was imprisoned for extortion with weapons and vehicle fires. He was not releasable only ten years later, in 2033. The FO Justice union communicated this Saturday afternoon: “For several years, FO Justice has been requesting the construction of a Specially Designed Hospital Unit (UHSA) on the grounds of the Thuir hospital so that dangerous prisoners can be monitored by prison staff. This construction is supposed to see the light of day next year, in 2025 […] but the timetable and opening of the work remains unknown.”
