In an interview with Morning run published Saturday November 23, former Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin urges Prime Minister Michel Barnier to submit to Parliament the “constitutional proposal” recognizing a status of autonomy for Corsica, a project interrupted by the dissolution of the Assembly.

“This proposal must now be presented by Michel Barnier to Parliament as quickly as possible. This is what Emmanuel Macron said to [Gilles Simeoni, le président du Conseil exécutif de l’île] which he received recently”estimates Gérald Darmanin in this interview.

“The hardest part has been done. We have restored civil peace in Corsica. I have initiated, at the request of the Head of State, a historic process, and for the first time a Minister of the Interior has mentioned the question of the autonomy that we negotiated”also declares the deputy from the North.

“A question now arises, can the parliamentary representation adopt the constitutional proposal? The answer is yes, and even more so than before. There is a large majority in the Palais-Bourbon between the LR with which we form a majority, the socialists, the centrists of Liot, and on the side of the Senate”he continues.

“I ask, I repeat, the Prime Minister to include this text on the agenda of Parliament. We must not be afraid.”

The so-called Beauvau process was initiated in 2022 by Gérald Darmanin, at the request of Emmanuel Macron, to put an end to violence on the island caused by the death of independence activist Yvan Colonna. In March it resulted in an agreement providing “the recognition of a status of autonomy” from Corsica “within the Republic”.
