According to a CSA poll for CNEWS, JDD and Europe 1, published this Saturday, November 23, 48% of French people are for zero immigration in France, i.e. completely stopping immigration, whether legal or illegal.
Invited in the Big Interview this Thursday on CNEWS and Euope 1, Bruno Retailleau promised that all the decrees implementing the immigration law adopted last year will be taken before the end of the year, while 27% of the text is in force today. According to a CSA poll* for CNEWS, Europe 1 and JDD, published this Saturday, November 23, 48% of French people are for a more radical measure: zero immigration in France. That is to say, completely stopping immigration, whether legal or illegal.
They answered “for” to the question: “Are you for or against zero immigration in France, whether legal or illegal?” In contrast, 51% of respondents responded “against” and 1% did not comment.
In a previous survey published in October 2021, the French were more divided. In fact, 59% of them voted against zero immigration, while 41% were in favor.
In 2024, opinions are less clear-cut. Indeed, the “against” prevails in almost all age groups. He is the strongest among those aged 65 and over, who say they are against zero immigration in France at 55%. The share of “for” is greater among 18 to 24 year olds, at 54%.
The socio-professional category makes no more difference since here too, the “against” prevails among the CSP+ and the inactive, respectively at 54% and 52%. The CSPs, for their part, voted “for” at 54%.
Immigration, a “priority” for Bruno Retailleau
It is by consulting the political proximity of the respondents that the survey reveals large differences of opinion. Those who are in favor of completely stopping immigration to France, whether legal or illegal, are the most numerous among supporters of the National Rally (82%). However, opinions are more divided among Republican voters, with 46% “for” and 54% “against”.
On the other hand, whether for supporters of the presidential majority or of the left, the “against” side undoubtedly wins. The latter is in all cases greater than 70%. It even reached 88% among La France Insoumise voters.
As soon as he arrived at the Ministry of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau promised a new immigration law by spring. The Minister of the Interior indicated that the revision of the European return directive was the “priority” that he wanted to see achieved under the Polish presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2025. “We will obtain the modification of this directive return to make removals much easier,” he assured CNEWS.
