After 2 years, these parishioners of Orne will be warm again

While for several weeks, temperatures have been gradually decreasing as winter approaches, the faithful of the parish can appreciate the new heating of the church of La Ferté-Macé (Orne).

“The objective was that the new heating can be put into service for Toussaint, and that was the case,” underlined Roland Foucher, deputy mayor for the living environment, during a presentation Thursday morning, November 14, which brought together: the mayor Michel Leroyer and Rémi Dujarrier, delegated municipal councilor, roads and housing; Benjamin Berny, responsible for buildings in the City's technical services; and for the parish of Saint François in Pays Fertois, Father Christophe Peschet, parish priest, with Olivier Héroutmember of the economic council.

2 years without heating

For the record, for almost 30 years (1995), the church and the Romanesque chapel were heated by an oil-fired hot air generator, “which had already encountered problems around ten years ago, requiring repairs” notes the mayor.

In December 2022, when the system had given up the ghost, the town hall decided to review the heating method with two independent systems: one, gas, for the Notre-Dame church; and the other, with electricity for the Romanesque chapel.

If the offices were maintained during the first winter, “they were relocated to Bagnoles, during that of 2023-2024” noted the elected officials.

Municipal heritage

While some may have been surprised by the duration of the project, the mayor and his deputy argued that it initially required “bringing the boiler room up to standard with the intervention of the specialist Rémy Gouillioud design office.” in the heating of churches. Work had to be carried out upstream by our technical services, without forgetting the construction of the pipes to bring in the gas.”

There were also added difficulties for companies in supplying materials following the covid period, “particularly for certain ducts” specifies Roland Foucher, but also humidity problems.

The two main companies to intervene were SCF and the Pottier company. The cost came to €166,173 including tax to which must be added €6,800 for waterproofing work.

“This project, which contributes to the maintenance of municipal heritage, was carried out self-financing while awaiting assistance within the framework of the energy saving certificate” indicated Michel Leroyer. The gas and electricity contracts are in the name of the parish.

“We like this heater and the simplicity of using it. We will then see what the consumption cost will be,” concluded Olivier Hérout.
