What is the mayor of Lyon still used for?

If the City of remains symbolically the place of political power, most of the powers are now exercised by the Métropole de Lyon. A level where Lyon's elected officials are quite discreet.

For four years, Grégory Doucet has been a discreet metropolitan councilor. The creation of the Métropole de Lyon, which has been a full-fledged local authority since 2020, made it necessary to dissociate the functions of mayor of Lyon from those of president of the agglomeration. From Louis Pradel to Gérard Collomb via Michel Noir, the two mandates were historically associated and merged. For four years, the separation of the two communities has been institutionally clearer and Metropolitan Councilor Grégory Doucet embodies it with zeal. “At the Metropolis, we can count his interventions on the fingers of one hand. There is a sort of non-aggression pact between Bruno Bernard and him. They agreed not to step on each other's toes,” observes Sandrine Runel, PS deputy and elected in the two Lyon local authorities. On the environmental group's website where the interventions of green elected officials are compiled, there are five laudatory speeches by the mayor of Lyon.
