Ousmane Sonko is a warrior who knows no fear. He likes confrontation. He has beaten all his opponents since his resistance in 2021. He brought his candidate to the presidency of the Republic. And he also made his party PASTEF, the first political force in Senegal. The day after the Legislative elections where the Senegalese entrusted their destiny to Ousmane Sonko by giving him a more than comfortable majority in the National Assembly, the new strong man of the country announces the priorities of the new regime. And these priorities reflect the feeling of hatred that Ousmane Sonko has for the dignitaries of the old regime. This fixation distances Sonko from the real priorities of the people.
8 months ago, the Senegalese, in their overwhelming majority, chose 1is turn the candidate proposed by Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Party of African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF). This desire of the people to remove from power the former dignitaries who governed this country for 12 years reflected the general feeling of the populations frustrated and abandoned by clan governance. And the Senegalese elected President Diomaye for his program based on the policy of rupture proposed by the leader of PASTEF, Ousmane Sonko.
And with the results of the Legislative elections, the Senegalese offered Sonko total power to implement his policy of rupture which would offer the Senegalese better living conditions. Of the 165 seats in the National Assembly, the Senegalese gave Ousmane Sonko and his PASTEF party a comfortable and absolute majority of more than 130 deputies. All this so that the leader of PASTEF has free rein to change the difficult daily life of the Senegalese. Despite the expectations of the Senegalese, PASTEF party officials quickly announced the priorities of the new authorities which have nothing to do with those of the populations.
According to several PASTEF dignitaries who are the authorized voices of the ruling party, Sonko’s first projects have been defined. These are the amnesty law which must be abolished and the High Court of Justice which must be set up to judge former President Macky Sall and his former ministers who are implicated by Sonko. The amnesty law was adopted on February 28, 2024 by the Council of Ministers and approved on Wednesday March 6, 2024 by the majority of deputies. Of the 165 parliamentarians, 94 deputies voted for its adoption, 49 against and 3 abstentions.
What does this amnesty law say?
The amnesty law will cover “ all acts likely to qualify as a criminal or correctional offense, committed between February 1, 2021 and February 25, 2024, both in Senegal and abroad, relating to demonstrations or having political motivations, including those made by all communication media, whether their authors have been judged or not “. Sonko wants to repeal this law to prosecute the ex-president, as well as law enforcement officials such as Félix Antoine Diome, ex-minister of the interior, and General Moussa Fall, former boss of the gendarmerie. It is Sonko’s hatred that pushes him to make the repeal of the amnesty law and the High Court of Justice priorities.
Ousmane Sonko puts in the background the real priorities which are the reduction in the prices of basic necessities, jobs for young people, the improvement of the health system and the education sector, the renegotiation of fishing agreements, the fight against insecurity, stopping irregular emigration, increasing salaries, reviving crafts, partnership with the national private sector and the adoption of a new framework for SMEs/SMIs.
The Senegalese demand “Jog Job”. Ousmane Sonko can take care of the Senegalese and let justice take its course with the prosecution of people suspected of embezzlement or objectives. Ousmane Sonko should let justice do its work and not interfere in the work of the prosecutor and the judicial financial pool. Sonko accused several former officials without respecting the principle of the presumption of innocence.
