Heavy rain and gusts of wind, as well as lightning and hail are forecast over a large part of the country on Saturday, early in the morning and then in the afternoon. Météo-France calls for caution.

The weather promises to be electric this election weekend. The scorching sun of recent days will give way to strong thunderstorms forecast from Landes to Poitou, during the night of Friday June 28 to Saturday June 29. Then these bad weather will spread on Saturday during the day to a large part of the country, from the South-West to the North-East, with significant precipitation, great electrical activity, hail and strong gusts of wind, warns Météo-France .

The meteorological institute has placed 25 departments on orange alert: Landes, Gironde, Charente-Maritime, Charente, Vienne, Deux-Sèvres, Cher, Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire, Jura, Doubs, Haute-Saône, Territoire de Belfort, Yonne, Aube, Haute-Marne, Marne, Côte-d’Or, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, Vosges, Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin, Meuse, Ardenne.

The most violent storms could affect Burgundy-Franche-Comté and the Grand-Est region. In these regions, cumulative rainfall of 50 to 80 mm in a short period of time, very strong gusts (locally 100 km/h or more), large hail and intense electrical activity are possible.

This stormy deterioration, which should be strong until 9 a.m., then from 3 p.m., will be caused by an altitude depression, called a “cold drop”, currently located in the south of Spain.

Only the regions from Brittany to Nord-Pas-de-Calais, the south-east of the PACA region and Corsica remain away from these bad weather, and maintain calmer but cloudy weather. The North-East will still be under these storms during the night from Saturday to Sunday, before they evacuate over Germany on Sunday.

In the context of climate change associated with a warmer climate, the water content of air masses in these stormy situations tends to increase, leading to more intense and rainier phenomena, specifies Météo-France.
