Morocco imported, from November 1 to 20, 222,000 tons of wheat from Russia, compared to 119,000 tons in the same period a year earlier, said Elena Tyurina, director of the analytical department of the Grain Union of Russia.

It is particularly worth noting that this is due to the fact that Morocco will increase the volume of its imports. of wheat and the main emphasis will be on purchases from Russia.

African countries, which previously mainly purchased wheat from EU countries, see that supplies of European wheat could be less stable and less secure due to a reduction in export potential.

This Wednesday, L’Opinion indicated that Peter McMeekin, Australian analyst of the global cereals market from the consultancy firm Grain Brokers Australia, indicated that Morocco should obtain wheat supplies during the 2024-2025 season more from Russia than from the European Union.

As a reminder, domestic wheat consumption in Morocco is expected to increase in line with population growth, from 10 million tonnes in 2023/24 to 10.1 million tonnes this season.
