In the 8th district, Alexandra Martin still carried by the David Lisnard effect?

In this coastal constituency, outgoing MP Alexandra Martin is still a favorite, with the aura of David Lisnard, mayor of Cannes (and replacement) to strengthen her electoral weight. But the RN is in ambush, and Renaissance hopes to put up resistance…

The state of play

The 8th district is a stronghold of the Republican right, which has had some of its best scores there in elections, both local and national. Louise Moreau (UDF mayor of Mandelieu) won the deputy seat in 1988, before Bernard Brochand, ex-mayor of Cannes, succeeded her in 2021. The place is now occupied by her former chief of staff, Alexandra Martin, who has become a loyal supporter of David Lisnard, triumphantly re-elected mayor with 88% in 2020, and who reigns without sharing or opposition over his town. A support that weighs oh so much, at the time of submitting once again to the verdict of the polls.

Challenges

Despite this anchoring, the legislative elections have not always been a pleasure for the official candidate of the Republican right. In 1993, it was Michel Mouillot (UDF dissident) who took the lead in the first round ahead of Louise Moreau. The same for the frontist Albert Peyron in 1997, or the Macronist Philippe Buerch facing Bernard Brochand in 2017. From there the National Rally, which largely took the lead in the European elections (38.53%), completely reshuffled the cards , there is a step that will not necessarily be taken. Unless a three-way match, with the Renaissance candidate once again qualified in the second round, further endangers the LR-NE right.

The weight of the 2022 ballot

President Macron’s surprise decision has already dissolved…the number of candidates. There were twelve in 2022, compared to only seven on the starting line today. The fact remains that the votes should still be concentrated on a top three, the order of arrival of which remains to be defined. This time without a Reconquest candidate to take votes from the far right, Dorette Landerer (RN), opposition municipal councilor in Vallauris, intends to improve her score (18.61%) and qualify at least for the second round . On her campaign posters, it is the faces of Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen who smile, but the liberal nurse also claims the support… of Éric Ciotti, in the name of the Union of Rights.

In the ranks of the presidential majority, there was no crowd after Jean-Valéry Desens (Horizons) threw in the towel. The former opposition elected official in Mandelieu had nevertheless made it through the first round (19.47%) in 2022. Will Mike Castro Demaria be able to do at least as well? The Renaissance candidate, “who has always supported Gabriel Attal and opposes extremes “, is gently fighting in the ranks of the municipal opposition in Le Cannet. Here he is as a devoted soldier of Macronie in a battle that promises to be bold. On the Left, the mandolocian Lucia Soudant is sticking to it for the new Popular Front, but the score of La France Insoumise in the European elections (7.89%, in 5th position) leaves her with little more hope of victory.
