850 kilometers. Michel Soriano, mayor of Lasséran in the Gers, crossed France for a tree. On Wednesday, June 26, during the Democracy Awards organized by the ASDPH, a non-profit association that owns the newspapers of the Sipa Ouest-France group, Michel Soriano, a former finalist of the Award, offered a young ginkgo biloba to Kléber Arhoul, director of the Caen Peace Memorial, where the ceremony was held.

“It is a small, insignificant tree for many, but the ginkgo biloba is the first tree that grew back after the atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. recalled the city councilor. The seed that became this tree comes from Hiroshima. I am very moved to offer the last to this place, the Caen Memorial. »

Already a ginkgo planted by the Dalai Lama

“We are going to plant this tree in the memorial garden of the Memorial in the name of all these young people who landed here 80 years ago,” thanked Kléber Arhoul. And to add: “I have to go to Hiroshima in September, I will be proud to tell the mayor that we have a tree from his home here. »

This is not the first ginkgo biloba in the Memorial garden. In 1997, the visiting Dalai Lama himself planted one.

The next edition of the Democracy Prize will be launched in October 2024. Information on www.prixdelademocratie.org.
