The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Mélanie Joly, today issued the following statement:

“1,000 days ago, Russia turned its war against Ukraine into a brutal, full-scale invasion. Russian President Vladimir Putin expected a quick and decisive victory.

“President Putin was wrong, and his claims that he is protecting the Ukrainian people have been proven to be completely false. Russia’s invasion is nothing more than a means to seize land and resources, and an attempt to forcibly redraw internationally recognized borders. Instead of protecting the Ukrainian people, Russia has, for 1,000 days, caused the death and injury of countless Ukrainians, torn families apart, illegally deported Ukrainian children, destroyed homes and devastated communities. Russia has committed serious human rights violations, including war crimes, crimes against humanity and despicable acts of sexual violence against innocent people.

“This protracted war has also had significant global repercussions, affecting the global economy and food security. Russia’s blatant disregard for the territorial integrity of a sovereign nation has undermined the very foundations of international security. This is a threat not only to Ukraine and the region, but also to global security. It is a threat to all of us.

“In the face of this brutal aggression, Ukraine has demonstrated incredible resilience and determination in the defense of its territory, its culture and its people. The spirit, strength and ingenuity of the Ukrainian people have inspired people around the world and strengthened their commitment to supporting Ukraine.

“As we solemnly mark 1,000 days of full-scale invasion, Canada is committed to supporting Ukraine in the defense of its people, sovereignty and territorial integrity against Russia’s brutal aggression. Our support for Ukraine will continue, as we work to build a future based on lasting peace, justice and respect for international norms.

« Slava Ukraini [Gloire à l’Ukraine]!
