After two years of work, the new Anatole-France school was inaugurated this Monday, November 18. A strong commitment of 6.75 million euros in the Île de Thau district.
The mobilization matched the event. Songs, readings of texts: the children of Anatole-France and Suzanne-Lacore fervently accompanied the inauguration of their new school, this Monday, November 18.
And what a school! In two years, the establishment, which was built 50 years ago, has been transformed. From a thermal sieve, it has become a modern building designed to face global warming, a “place that embodies collective ambition, hope and the future”summarizes academic director Catherine Côme.
Complete renovation of premises, renovation of the canteen, creation of a 200 m2 multipurpose room2 with breathtaking views of the Thau lagoon, creation of a vegetated and waterproofed “oasis” courtyard in co-design with parents, students and teachers: the new school group of eighteen classes and some 300 students has changed times . “It restores a welcoming image to this school group whose geographical location is undoubtedly unique in France. In two years of construction on an occupied site, the atmosphere has not always been good but the challenge has been met”underlined architect Yves Rostagno.
A budget of 6.75 million euros
The budget to achieve this was to match: no less than 6.75 million euros, including 1.5 million in state aid.. “Youth is at the heart of my commitment […] Knowledge and education are two essential pillars of 'living well together' and of our Republic.”recalled Mayor François Commeinhes.
In this sensitive neighborhood, it is “the Republic which gives everyone a chance for this formidable republican bet which is to say that no matter where you are born, no matter what family you are born into, you can succeed.”underlined prefect François-Xavier Lauch. Who did not fail to say, in front of all the children and the many mothers present: “We give you a lot and we ask you to respect this investment in its values and in the physical integrity of the building.”
Twenty-two housing units in place of the old Suzanne-Lacore school
This will be the epilogue of the project, which falls within the framework of the National Agency for Urban Renewal (Anru). The old Suzanne-Lacore school is still standing but its weeks are numbered. Initially planned for this fall, demolition will take place at the beginning of 2025. Instead, twenty-two affordable housing units will be built on the 4,640 m2 of land: 14 individual houses and 8 intermediate housing units (in R + 1). The project is led by the company Promologis.
