According to Cher, her ex-husband, Sonny Bono, robbed her of her income.

The singer made the allegations to the New York Times while promoting her new book, Cher: The Memoir. “He took all my money. I said to myself, “We are husband and wife. Half of the things are his, the other half are mine.” It didn’t occur to me that there was another way,” said the 78-year-old singer.

Sonny Bono created the company Cher Enterprises, of which he owned 95%, and gave the remaining 5% to his lawyer.

Cher continues: “To this day, I wish I could ask, 'Man, at what point, on what day, did you say to yourself, 'Yeah, you know what? I'll take his money.”

The couple met in 1961, when Cher was 16 and Sony Bono was 27. She became his governess before they became a couple. They married in 1964 and separated in 1972, before divorcing in June 1975, after a bitter legal fight. They had a son, Chaz.

During their time together, the couple, under the name Sonny & Cher, released hit songs such as Baby Don't Go and I Got You Babe, before appearing on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Dear Show. They have been nominated for two Grammy Awards and have sold more than 40 million records.

In her book, Cher recounts how fame changed her former husband, saying he had an “it's my way or nothing” attitude and often forbade her from attending parties.

“I woke up one morning – early, around 5 o’clock – and I said to myself, ‘I’m not going to do this anymore. I'm going to leave him.” I started putting together a plan that was so risky that I don’t know how I had the courage to do it,” Cher said.
