The summer holidays are about to begin, but enthusiasm is not there for French tourism professionals. Unlike the last three years marked by strong post-pandemic consumption, 2024 promises to be difficult. Hotels and vacation clubs are showing lower occupancy rates than in previous years, and airlines are seeing a significant drop in reservations.

A mixed summer season

The main cause of this decline is economic. Inflation, although less marked than the previous year, is rise to 2.3% in May, combined with decreasing purchasing power. According to a Europ Assistance barometer, the French’s vacation budget has fallen by 14% this year. As a result, even if the desire to travel persists, households are forced to scale back their travel plans.

In front of this situation, tourism players are stepping up their efforts to attract travelers. Airlines are at the forefront with attractive promotions. Ryanair recently launched a flash sale for summer flights, while EasyJet is offering 15% discounts on selected flights. Air France is not to be outdone and offers attractive prices, with flights to North America for less than 500 euros and to Europe for less than 150 euros.

Exceptional circumstances for tourism

Promotional offers are not limited to airlines. Tour operators, hotels and holiday clubs are also participating in this race for customers. Belambra, for example, offers discounts of up to 50% on the second week of stay. Other tour operators offer promotions of 40% for stays in France or 30% for destinations abroad.

In addition, destinations like the Maghreb, which are suffering the impact of the tense geopolitical context, are banking on promotions of 25 to 45% to attract travelers by mid-July. These offers aim to offset travelers’ fears and boost reservations.

In addition to economic difficulties, other factors complicate the situation. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will attract thousands of French people, could divert some vacationers from traditional tourist destinations. In addition, geopolitical instability in certain regions, particularly near conflict zones, encourages travelers to be more cautious in their choice of destinations.
