Presented out of competition and acclaimed at the last Cannes Film Festival, Kevin Costner’s new film, “Horizon: An American Saga”, sounds like the filmmaker’s return to grace in the world of the 7th art. With his epic western, he rediscovers the view of his younger years.

The story is known. 1859, before the Civil War, the American West gradually became the Promised Land. But the native Indians don’t see it that way…

The phoenix Kevin Costner, for the first chapter of his saga “Horizon: an American saga”, presented out of competition at Cannes last May, was able to elevate his art to the extent of the expectations that the 7th art has always placed in him, in attests to the long minutes of ovation at the end of the screening, and the moist eyes of the director, as relieved as they are touched.

An American fresco

From merciless massacres and revenge, to more intimate stories where the survivors seek to find a place among others, Kevin Costner’s camera – which here finds its favorite genre which has earned him his greatest successes – deploys ambitious means to resurrect the spirit of westerns of yesteryear (the first tragic scene echoes “The Prisoner of the Desert” from 1956) while multiplying the narrative angles. As a result, the film is very dense, a bit too concentrated; especially since three hours is a long time.

But what mastery, what epic breath and what mastery of the great outdoors… During the film, treasures of nostalgia inevitably resurface. A second chapter should also see the light of day in theaters and, to our great pleasure, at almost 70 years old, the man from “Dances with Wolves”, as he told us at the press conference during the fortnight, is always driven by his legendary enthusiasm and perseverance.
