A Camargue horse in difficulty in a canal was rescued on Sunday June 23 thanks to the intervention of the Gard animal intervention unit.

Sunday June 23, around 12 p.m., a Camargue horse having escaped the vigilance of its owners found itself in bad shape in a Rhône canal in Sète, in Franquevaux (30). Exhausted, the horse was unable to reach the bank, which required the mobilization of the specialized unit in animal intervention from Gard.

This is an intervention that we are used to in this sector. We sometimes have complex interventions, this time the horse came out on its own. It was just necessary to guide him towards a favorable path.

To rescue the animal, three firefighters from the unit managed to tie the animal using a halter to direct it to a favorable area so that it could get out of the water itself. A routine operation that lasted less than an hour. The Gard gendarmes, who were present, reported the intervention on social networks.

“There is no doubt that despite the rise in temperatures to come, the animal should hesitate before trying to swim again!”

The horse was able to return to dry land, safe and sound. The firefighters were able to identify it thanks to its chip and thus find its owner.

Rescues of horses in difficulty are common in the region. The unit specialized in animal intervention in Gard identifies around 40 interventions concerning equines each year. In April 2024, a horse was trapped in the mud; in March 2024, another fell into a well.
