Meet our pre-neolithic Gurgy ancestors until July 7 at the Gurgy cultural space which exhibits the fruits of the work of archaeologists. They unearthed the history of human beings who lived in Gurgy 6,700 years ago.

Prehistoric DNA. This is the name of this exhibition which presents two large-scale family trees spanning several generations. On a global level, this is an unprecedented result for a Neolithic necropolis.

Gurgy at the cutting edge of modernity

6000 years ago, the way of life of Homo Sapiens Sapiens was based on gathering and hunting. Gradually, human beings invented livestock breeding and agriculture, thus entering the Neolithic period. Archaeological research carried out in the Yonne valley between 2004 and 2007 provided evidence of this pivotal period from 6700 BC, making this sector a place at the cutting edge of progress.

The archaeological excavations of the 2000s were then accompanied by DNA samples from the bones found. The large quantity of data collected, unprecedented on an international scale for prehistory, made it possible to give a face to all the members of the group buried in Gurgy in the necropolis the Noisats. Of the family portraits which you can therefore admire at the cultural space of Gurgy until July 7, like those of two brothers who constitute the starting point of the archaeological research of Gurgy.

To find out more, listen to the interview with Jean-Luc Liverneaux, Deputy Mayor of Gurgy in charge of cultural and historical development.
