The meeting was held without the presence of the press but at the end of the discussion with members of CRIF Grenoble-Dauphiné, some candidates said that it “did them good.”

Hervé Gerbi, president of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France in Isère, had invited 15 candidates to the legislative elections, constituting “a republican bloc ranging from Stéphane Gemmani, PS, to the vice-president of the region, Nathalie Béranger, LR, representing 7 of the 10 constituencies, including those of Grenoble Three outgoing Ensemble deputies were also present: Olivier Véran, Caroline Abadie and Marjolaine Meynier-Millefert.

Rise of anti-Semitism in France

In the preamble, Hervé Gerbi recalled that the rise of anti-Semitism in France was worrying. He mentioned the rape in Courbevoie of a 12-year-old girl because she was Jewish. He also showed the candidates a photo taken in Fontaine the day before, June 22, where an inscription “Death to the Jews” had been made on an electoral notice board.

Then, during a round table, the candidates answered questions from CRIF on their constituency and on national and international issues.

Finally, the president of CRIF Grenoble-Dauphiné took the floor for a conclusion which was open to the press. Here is essentially what he said: “Today, we are faced with two blocs which advocate separatism and exploit the Jewish community on both sides. There is no other choice than to mobilize for the republican bloc that you represent” he told the candidates.

The Jewish community does not want to be exploited

“So it’s up to you, we’re putting all our strength into this last week and it’s up to me to convince internally as well as here, with the association representatives, not to give in to the siren song.”

Hervé Gerbi also wanted to say that “contact was not broken with those who chose an alliance of circumstance which seemed dangerous to us” and “from July 8, the CRIF Grenoble-Dauphiné will have to continue the dialogue with certain components of the Popular Front because our society, damaged by this campaign, will absolutely need it.
