A dog brigade, made up of dogs specialized in leak detectionwas mobilized by Véolia on the SMAEP Périgord Est drinking water network. The union was the first to try the experiment in Dordogne and in the Southwest. A first edition was already held last year and the process will be repeated every year.

The dogs are trained to sniff out the odors of chlorine, used in low doses in the drinking water network. They thus make it possible to precisely locate leaks, particularly in difficult-to-access areas where traditional methods are limited. This approach significantly reduces the search area and facilitates rapid repair of leaks.

For a week, Kelly, Arnold and Rio sniffed several kilometers of network and identified around twenty leaks. Rapid interventions are planned by Véolia in order to limit water loss.

The dog brigade is made up of former French army dog handlers, specialists in detection and research. Their expertise, combined with usual acoustic detection techniques, makes research more efficient.
