in Morbihan, the RN rehabilitates a suspended candidate

“We were completely wrong about this gentleman” : the vice-president of the National Rally (RN), Louis Aliot, justified Sunday June 23 the “rehabilitation” of Joseph Martin, candidate for the legislative elections in Morbihan who had his support withdrawn from the party after one of his old tweets was reported by the newspaper Release.

On Wednesday, the RN reacted after the publication of the daily article which had spotted a tweet from October 22, 2018 (since deleted) in which Joseph Martin had written: “Gas brought justice to the victims of the Shoah. » Unable to withdraw Mr. Martin’s candidacy, the party made it known that he had not “no more support from the National Rally” : “He is suspended and will be summoned with a view to his exclusion. »

Joseph Martin defended himself the next day, assuring Agence France-Presse (AFP) that his message had no anti-Semitic character, quite the contrary. According to him, this tweet was a reaction to the death, which occurred the day before, of the far-right figure Robert Faurisson, who denied the existence of the Jewish genocide by the Nazis and the existence of gas chambers. Mr. Martin thought at the time that the death was linked to a gas leak, he explains.

A message “taken out of context”

“My tweet was to defend the Jews against all the ideas that this man had vomited”he told AFP, “a form of respect towards all the victims of the Shoah and all the Jews who are martyred everywhere”. The retiree deplored that this message was, according to him, “taken out of context”. “My honor is being harmed. My family is being harmed”he said, denouncing “a national cabal against [lui] ».

” It is Release who used a controversial tweet about this person”, Louis Aliot in turn declared on Sunday, when he was the guest of France Inter, France Télévisions and Monde for the show “Political Questions”. “Looking at all of his tweets, that’s not at all what he meant. He made tweets against collaboration, against Marshal Pétain”said the RN mayor of Perpignan, specifying that the candidate had been “rehabilitated” after a meeting of the “conflict commission”.

“A conflicts commission met on Friday and after studying this case, it was considered that the comment was not anti-Semitic. It is well reinvested”a source within the RN confirmed to AFP.
