In September 2021, the activist forced a gendarmerie blockade as part of a demonstration organized on the Larivot bridge, injuring three gendarmes and a police officer.

The Correctional Appeals Chamber made its deliberations public this morning. Serge Romney is sentenced to 30 months in prison, including 18 months suspended, without a committal warrant. The MDES (Movement for Decolonization and Social Emancipation) activist was prosecuted for having forced a gendarmerie roadblock in September 2021 in Macouria, during a demonstration against compulsory vaccination against Covid-19.

He is also sentenced to the cancellation of his driving license, confiscation of his vehicle and compulsory road safety training.

Serge Romney appeared in particular for “refusal by the driver of a vehicle to obey a summons to stop directly exposing others to a risk of death or permanent disability” and “violence against a person holding public authority followed by incapacity not exceeding 8 days.

Three gendarmes and a police officer have joined as a civil party in this case.

The sentence on appeal is very close to that decided by the judges at first instance: thirty months in prison, and fifteen months suspended.
