The apartments which will accommodate the athletes are not equipped with air conditioning in order to ensure the sustainability of the world event. However, some delegations intend to keep their athletes cool.

Delegations are ready to do anything to keep their athletes cool this summer. And this, despite the environmental objectives of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The organizing committee of the world event wants Games “green and sustainable” with a reduction in the carbon footprint compared to the 2012 London Olympics. This is why the athletes’ rooms are not equipped with air conditioning.

To compensate for this absence, the Olympic village has more than 8,000 fans and is equipped with a system of cooling pipes under the floors. The apartments are also equipped with reversible floors which produce heat in winter and cold in summer.

“High priority”

Despite these investments, several sports delegations still plan to air-condition the rooms. Sarah Hirshland, chief executive of the U.S. Olympic Committee, said Friday the federation would provide mobile air conditioning units. Although she says she appreciates efforts towards sustainability. “As you can imagine, this is a period in which consistency and predictability are key to Team USA’s performance”, she explained. Sarah Hirshland added that the air conditioning was “a very high priority” et “an element that athletes consider essential for their performance”.

The Australian Olympic Committee has already installed air conditioners in each room “to facilitate the sleep of athletes, many of whom will have to rest during the day”, explained Anna Meares, the head of the delegation to the Guardian . The president of the Greek Olympic Committee also confirmed that air conditioning units will also be installed, to the Washington Post.

Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Canada and Brazil are also among the countries planning to introduce air conditioners. In any case, if the weather remains gloomy in Paris during the Games, the athletes will ultimately not need air conditioning.
