A canoe adrift for more than 21 days, carrying 85 Senegalese migrants, was intercepted. The authorities report a provisional toll of 5 deaths, while 37 people are in a state of hypothermia with a life-threatening prognosis. Souleymane Aliou Diallo, President of the NGO Otra Africa, expressed his concerns during an interview on Iradio, calling on the State of Senegal to act. He argues that the government should sign agreements with host countries to facilitate the integration of Senegalese migrants.

“I appeal to the authorities: clandestine departures by canoe continue. We have programs to support young Senegalese people. As we have already said, we could allow 35,000 young Senegalese to migrate each year at no cost to the Senegalese state. It is essential to support our young people who aspire to leave. The right to travel is a natural right. We must dialogue and support young Senegalese in their desire to migrate,” declared Souleymane Aliou Diallo.

Remember that during a press conference on solutions to the irregular emigration crisis in 2023, the President of the NGO Otra Africa recommended that the Senegalese State promote “the expansion of circular migration with ‘other countries’, an approach he estimates would allow Senegal to organize safe and controlled migration for more than 30,000 young people each year.
