To limit the spread of African swine fever, the Canton of Ticino is encouraging hunters to sell slaughtered wild boars in a dedicated center. The game is then served in school canteens and Ticino administration restaurants.
African swine fever – deadly for domestic pigs and wild boars, but harmless to humans – is proliferating in Lombardy (Italy). Although this highly contagious disease is not yet present in Switzerland, it should soon arrive in Ticino.
To better anticipate the phenomenon, the Canton is increasing measures to contain the virus.
Among them, the encouragement of hunting in order to reduce as much as possible the presence of ungulates in the territory. From Saturday, and until January 22, 2025, hunters will be able to record their prey in a civil protection center. The meat from slaughtered wild boars will be bought back at the price of 4 francs per kilo before butchering by the authorities.
