Paris 2024 Olympic Games – “Now it’s going to be great fun”: Léon Marchand, relieved and excited

He did the job. He came to Chartres for this and he leaves these French championships with what he came to look for: his four individual tickets for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. But the new sensation of world swimming does not hide it : it hasn’t been easy. “I am relieved“, reacted Léon Marchand at the end of his selection week spent in Eure-et-Loir where he competed in the 400 m medley, the 200 m breaststroke, the 200 m butterfly and therefore the 200 m four swim Friday.”Mentally it wasn’t easy. I’m still doing good times, it’s not exactly what I was hoping for but I’m mostly relieved.”

The double test will really help me with the final decision

If he did not manage to really get close to his best times throughout the week in the Chartres basin, the essential thing is indeed there. “He made the selection time for the four events in which he was entered, so that’s good“, summed up his trainer Nicolas Castel. Because the five-time world champion knows it very well: it is not this week that he was supposed to panic the times but at the end of July when the whole planet will have their eyes on him. “Times at this stage don’t mean much“, added Castel. “What interests me most is the way he went about it.”

And on that side, there is something positive. Despite not optimal sensations and a sluggish 400m medley to start, the Toulouse native who trains in the United States was able to overcome the difficulties of the moment to achieve his objectives. “I had doubts after my 400m medley because I saw that my state of form was not optimal but in the end everything went well. The 200m medley is always hard. I am a little overdone but I managed my week well“, confessed the five-time world champion on the website of the French federation.

I did the step that was the most difficult for me

Above all, the French star, who has accumulated a lot of fatigue in recent weeks with training, travel and even jet lag, took some bearings during this stressful moment of qualifying on the road to Paris 2024. He now knows more on the efforts that his Olympic quest will require. And in particular on this delicate double 200 m butterfly-200 m breaststroke whose finals are scheduled a little more than an hour apart on July 31 (8:36 p.m. for the 200 m butterfly and 10:08 p.m. for the 200 m breaststroke). “I have a lot of benchmarks that came back this week. The double test (Wednesday) will really help me with the final decisione”, slips the champion who still hesitates to try this risky bet.

“Relieved”, the protégé of the illustrious Bob Bowman who “was rather positive“says Marchand will now be able to concentrate calmly on the Olympic Games. He has a few weeks to fine-tune the final adjustments. And above all to rest: “I still have to recover before the Olympics. Next week I will increase in volume before recovering well“, launches the Toulouse resident, who does not hide his excitement at finally being able to focus solely on the objective of his year, of his career surely: “It’s going to be the time, finally! I did the step that was the most difficult for me, now it’s going to be a blast. And obviously I’m going to think about Paris a little bit every day.
