A true legend of our national team, third most capped player in the history of the Red Devils, Toby Alderweireld was honored during half-time of the match between Belgium and Italy.
A tribute was paid to Toby Alderweireld at half-time of the Nations League match between Belgium and Italy at the King Baudouin Stadium on Thursday evening. The 35-year-old defender, current captain of Antwerp, has played 127 games with the Red Devils in his career.
Alderweireld has not played for Belgium since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He then announced his international retirement in March 2023.
What is there to regret about the Antwerp defender? “It’s at the transition level that Tedesco is not good. Rely on players like them, maybe not always as starters, but in the group to advise, put them in certain matches to help. We say it every match, there is a transition that must take place, it is also with the veterans who must slowly leave their place. Here, we have given way directly to youth“said Kevin Mirallas at halftime.
With 127 matches, the defender is the third most capped player for the Devils behind Jan Vertonghen (157) and Axel Witsel (132). He participated in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Championships as well as the 2016 and 2021 European Championships.
